DIVING OPERATIONS INTERNSHIP

The Perry Institute for Marine Science/Caribbean Marine Research Center (PIMS/CMRC) offers several internships at its field station on Lee Stocking Island (LSI) in the Bahamas. Highly motivated individuals seeking educational opportunities in marine science are invited to apply.

PIMS is currently offering one Perry Fellow 'Waterfront Operations Internship'

By taking part in the daily workings of a busy scientific diving program, the Waterfront Operations intern will have a unique opportunity to gain diving, boating and operational experience at a tropical marine research center. The intern will assist both PIMS and visiting researchers with shore and in-water support, and will have one-to-one interaction with active marine scientists and scientific divers. Duties will include filling SCUBA cylinders, preparing vessels for daily use and maintaining the dive locker and waterfront. In addition, exposure to variety of diving techniques and technologies will provide opportunities for diver training.

One Diving Operations intern will be selected for 8-12-week periods, year-round. The internship is non-salaried, however, room and board (shared accommodation) and transportation between LSI and Exuma International Airport (Georgetown, Bahamas) will be provided. Dive Operations Interns will also have the opportunity to participate in several advanced training opportunities. To be considered, the applicant must:

  • Be pursuing or have recently completed a post-secondary degree in marine science or engineering.
  • Be a certified, active-status Dive Master (preferred) with personal liability insurance. For those who are not a Divemaster, this training can be incorporated into the internship program at his/her own expense.
  • Own all of own SCUBA equipment.
  • Have experience operating small vessels (preferred)
  • Have experience with waterfront safety (lifeguard/dockmaster preferred)

Successful applicants must meet PIMS diving requirements including a medical exam, first aid, CPR and oxygen administration training. Successful applicants must also carry Divers Alert Network (DAN) insurance.
