DIVING OPERATIONS INTERNSHIP


The Perry Institute for Marine Science/Caribbean Marine Research Center (PIMS/CMRC) is offering a dive operation internship at its field station on Lee Stocking Island (LSI) in the Bahamas. Highly motivated individuals seeking educational opportunities in dive operations and marine science are invited to apply.

By taking part in the daily workings of a busy scientific diving program, the Dive Operations intern will have a unique opportunity to gain dive operational experience at a tropical marine research center. The intern will work with the PIMS Diving Safety Officer (DSO) while the DSO is both on and off site. The intern will assist both PIMS and visiting researchers with shore and in-water support, and will have one-to-one interaction with active marine scientists and scientific divers. Duties will include filling SCUBA cylinders, routine maintenance of diving equipment includeing compressors, preparing vessels for daily use and maintaining the dive locker and waterfront. In addition, exposure to variety of diving techniques and technologies will provide opportunities for diver training.
Dive Operations Interns will also have the opportunity to participate in several advanced training opportunities such as Dive Rescue and Accident Management (DRAM) course, hazmat training for compressed gas handling and filling, and additional hands on experience in the dive center. One Diving Operations intern will be selected for 3 month minimum. To be considered, the applicant must:

Be a certified, active-status Divemaster (preferred)
• Be qualified as an AAUS Scientific Diver or a Scientific Diver in Training (DIT).
• Possess a complete set of scuba equipment.
• Have experience operating small vessels (preferred)
• Be trained in the maintenance and repair of scuba equipment (prferred)
• Have experience with waterfront safety (lifeguard/dockmaster preferred)

Successful applicants must meet PIMS diving requirements including first aid, CPR and oxygen administration training. Successful applicants must also carry Divers Alert Network (DAN) insurance.

This internship is a non-salaried position, however, interns will receive a fully or partially subsidized room (shared accommodation) and board. Transportation to Exuma International Airport (Georgetown, Bahamas) will be the responsibility of the chosen intern. Transportation from Georgetown to Lee Stocking Island will be provided by PIMS.
