From Concrete to Super Reef: Our Holiday Challenge
Coral reefs aren’t just gardens; they are cities. And right now, those cities are crumbling faster than we can rebuild them. Traditional restoration methods are vital, but they are often outpaced by climate change.
That is why the Perry Institute for Marine Science (PIMS) is partnering with Partanna to try something different. We aren’t just planting corals this season; we are engineering a new foundation for them.
Building the “Super Reef”
The challenge with traditional artificial reefs is often the material itself. Standard concrete has a high carbon footprint and can leach chemicals that slow coral growth.
Partanna has developed a building material that flips the script. It is carbon-negative—meaning it absorbs CO₂ from the atmosphere as it cures—and it actually gets stronger when exposed to seawater.
This December, we are deploying a 100m² demonstration reef in The Bahamas using this material. It’s designed to be a permanent, climate-resilient sanctuary for thermally tolerant corals.
Double Your Impact with Rick Fox
Rick Fox, Partanna’s co-founder and a proud Bahamian, understands that our oceans are the fabric of our national identity. He has committed to matching all donations up to the first $25,000.
- $25 becomes $50: Plants one heat-resilient coral.
- $250 becomes $500: Builds 1m² of the reef foundation.
Help Us Build the Holiday Reef
We need to raise $25,000 to complete the 100m² installation.
Donate today and Rick Fox will double your gift.
