Position: Fisheries Technician
The Perry Institute for Marine Science (PIMS) is a non-profit organization committed to ensuring the health and longevity of our ocean and the communities that depend on it. Our mission is to preserve coral reefs, coastal habitats and vital fisheries throughout The Bahamas and the Caribbean while working with local communities to unlock and implement sustainable solutions.
PIMS is seeking to hire a technician to support projects and activities for the Fisheries Research & Conservation Program (FRCP). The successful candidate will be passionate about marine science and environmental issues and demonstrate willingness to learn new skills. The FRCP Technician will participate in assessments or surveys for various fishery species, assist with data management and analysis, contribute to the preparation of technical reports and/or publications, popular media articles, social media posts and perform other assigned tasks.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- BSc/BA in Marine Science, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Oceanography, Geography or other closely related field (GPA ≥3.0)
- PADI (or other valid) SCUBA certification (Advanced or higher) with minimum of 50 dives (5 in the last year)
- Physically fit (strong swimmer) and able to conduct fieldwork
- Comfortable traveling to and working in remote locations throughout The Bahamas and Caribbean (including weekends)
- Competency with MS Office Suite and basic computer operations (e.g., finding, copying, and moving files, and downloading and installing software)
- Strong inter-personal and communication skills (oral and written)
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Self-motivated, results-oriented and able to work with minimal direct supervision
- Current passport and proof of COVID-19 vaccination upon hire
- Bahamian citizen/resident or ability to relocate to The Bahamas
Additional Qualifications & Skills
- Previous research experience
- Data analysis skills (e.g., Excel, SPSS, Minitab, R, etc.)
- Creative and artistic skills (e.g., infographics, posters, photography, filmmaking)
- First aid & CPR certification
